Background

My name is Durim Loshaj and I am an artist working and living in Erie, Pennsylvania. I was born in the country of Kosovo where I spent my early childhood up until the age of 8. I immigrated to America in 1999 as a refugee of the Kosovo War that was still raging at the time. I have made a home here ever since. My journey through art began in Kosovo during my formative years. At the time, I only drew for fun and my only goal was to become an artist when I grew up. The older I got the more dedicated and determined I became to reaching my goal. I attended college at Mercyhurst University where I studied and received a B.A. in Studio Art. Patience and persistence have been key to achieving my goals throughout the whole journey.

Artist Statement

My art is about combining natural and geometric patterns that contrast each other. Natural patterns are random and chaotic while geometric patterns are orderly and predictable. Each painting I make is pieced together like a collage in order to find the best composition and balance. Once I find the right composition I begin the process of painting. I start each painting by drawing my geometric grid, after that’s complete I draw the composition on top of the grid. I design each painting on Adobe Illustrator so when its time to paint I have all the colors ready to go. Once the painting is done I just rinse and repeat.
